Washinton County Courthouse

Washington County Courthouse

The Washington County courthouse standing a 1 South Main Street was built in November 1900. It was constructed at a total cost of 1,000,000 dollars. The building stands at 150 feet and was built in an Italian Renaissance style of architecture.

This courthouse is the fourth to be built in the country. To build the courthouse, town hall had to be picked up and moved back on 1897. This was considered a marvelous feat.

The plans for the courthouse were made by F. J. Osterling from pittsburgh. Most of the materials used for the courthouse were granite, sandstone, steel, iron, brick, and cement.

It is completely fireproof and consists of 54 rooms. The courthouse also has a rounded top that holds a statue of General George Washington.

When the cornerstone of the courthouse was built, a copper receptacle, containing relics from Washington's past was put in the northeast corner of the building.

The Washington County courthouse was added to the national register of historic places in 1973.
