The modern raft is an inflatable boat, consisting of
very durable,
multi-layered, rubberized or vinyl fabrics with several
independent air chambers.
The length of rafts varies between
3.5 meters (11 ft) and 6 meters (20 ft), the width varies between 1.8 meters (6 ft) and
2.5 meters (8 ft).
Unlike canoes and kayaks, rafts are
much more stable. You can stand in a raft without worrying about it
capsizing. Rafts also can hold up to six passengers. Being filled with
air, it will not fill with water or go under.
Rafts are very light weight, they can
be moved by one person. Some disadvantages of rafts are that it
requires at least three people to use and are filled with air so
they are prone to deflation without proper maintenance and can be a hassle to refill.
A trip down the river in a raft will
usually take about four hours. It takes longer, but is a lot
safer than any other mode of transportation on The Mohican River.
