The history of the canoe dates back to the native
Americans over the course of thousands of years. The word
"canoe" originates from the word "kenu", meaning dugout. This
is because they were made out of large tree trunks that were shaped
and hollowed out.
The canoes of today are much more advanced.
They are either made of plastic, wood, or metal and can stand up to
a lot more stress.
In my opinion, canoes are the most dangerous of the
three options of transportation on The Mohican River but are the
fastest. It only takes about two hours to get down the river using a canoe.
Up to three can fit in the canoe and there is a requirement of at least two
people to operate one.
When Canoeing, each person is
equipped with a single-sided paddle. To steer the canoe, you
paddle on the opposite side of which you want to turn. There is also back paddling, where
you paddle in the opposite motion and on the same side of which you
want to turn. The only disadvantage of back paddling is than it
slows the canoe down.
All passengers must remain seated the
whole time or else the canoe will easily tip. Even the
slightest movement the wrong way can cause a canoe to turn over
which is dangerous to everyone in the canoe and on the river.
