Projects
In scouting, we do MANY MANY MANY types of activities. At least once a month each troop will do scouting activities that vary from climbing to mowing lawns. Going around & offering to do work as a project is even done if nothing else is available. Such as mowing lawns, painting houses, helping move out or in, helping rid of extra wood, that sort of thing. Typically this is done as a fundraiser in my old troop but I've seen places where scouts will do this for fun &/or duty.
Many times these projects will be activities like fishing, going on a hike, swimming, etc. During these projects you will be taught how to handle emergency situations & taught how to properly perform the activity. With the right supplies, activities like a 6 mile hike is very entertaining, a great way to get physically active, & a good way to make new friends &/or strengthen those friendships. When scouts go anywhere, always have a buddy to avoid trouble &/or to have help when there is. We refer to that rule as the buddy system.
These projects are extremely fun & you gain experience in the activities. Plus you kind of need to do them often in order to get more badges. If you want to be an Eagle Scout, (Almost everyone does.) you have to get lots of badges. In order to get those badges you have to learn what they are for & work for them. In order to get most badges certain projects must be performed.
So as a bonus, the right projects will get you 1 step closer to getting a new badge. & that means 1 step closer to getting a higher rank badge. & that means 1 step closer towards getting your eagle badge.
But that's not just where it's at. Simple weekly meeting with your fellow scouts is important. You can't just get everything you need every month. You need to attend other scout ceremonies to receive those badges you've earned. & attending every scout meeting to work more on requirements for badges & planning a fund raiser for those projects in the 1st place.
But you can't just rely on working with others, you have to be self reliant as well. Going & doing requirements for badges yourself is absolutely vital to earning that eagle badge. You only have so much time, use it productively. But don't loose focus on your everyday life. You can't get all the requirements for eagle in once a month planning. Believe me, I was silly enough to try.
Overall just have fun. don't overwork yourself, & take the time you need. Even if you've out grown scouting, & you don't want to teach others scouting, you can ALWAYS do these activities just for fun. Oh & bring a buddy.
