History of Youtube

 

2005 - Youtube was made by three Paypal employees. Their names were Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim. The first video posted on the site was on April 23rd, 2005. The name of the video was "Me at the Zoo".

2006 - Youtube was purchased by Google for 1.65 billion dollars. Youtube also won Person of the Year by Time Magazine.

2007 - Youtube was able to diverge into nine countries in 2007. The countries include Brazil, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

2008 - Youtube made an agreement with MGM, Lions Gate Entertainment, and CBS to post full length films and movies on their site. They did this to challenge other companies such as Hulu.

2009 - This year was the time when music videos started to appear on the site. If you pay attention, many old music videos from Vevo was released in 2009. Also, Youtube allowed viewers in the United Kingdom to watch shows.

2010 - Youtube became huge this year. Youtube came out with a new design system to remove all the clutter. This year, Youtube was hosting two billion videos per day. They doubled the primetime audience of three major US television networks combined.

2011 - Youtube released a new version of their site interface and changed their logo to a darker red tone. The logo has never been changed since 2006. This year was a new evolution of videos. It was Gaming videos.

2012 - Youtube had around average, 800 million unique users per month and 60 hours of new videos are uploaded every minute. The algorithm for pay was changed from views to watch time. This caused a major jump in Gaming channels than from 2011. The first video to bring 1 billion views came this year and the video was "Gangnam Style". Livestreams became more common this year as the first presidential debate to livestream on Youtube, occurred this year.

2013 - Youtube had 1 billion unique users visit the site every month. A Youtuber named PewdiePie had become the most subscribed person on Youtube. In 2017, he is still going strong with 57 million subscribers. Youtube has now become the biggest form of entertainment in the world.

2014 - Youtube had not changed much this year, but the main trends that happened this year was the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. It was used to spread awareness to the ALS disease and raised 115 million dollars.

2015 - Youtube this year started a trend of vlogging channels. People decided to vlog their everyday life and soon became a popular idea. There are still vlogging channels up today, but it is uncertain when it will fall.

2016 - This year, people started making more and more drama channels. These drama channels would spark debates and people would choose sides. This trend didn't last long past 2016, but it wasn't a good time to be on Youtube.

2017 - Youtube's biggest star, Pewdiepie, started drama on Wall Street Journal about a controversial thing he did in a video. This caused advertisers to remove ads on Youtube and started a thing called "the adpocalypse". People started making less and less money. Now, things are getting back to a normal rate.
