What is tennis?

Tennis is a sport in which players hit a tennis ball across a court with rackets. Tennis can either be played as singles with two players on opposite sides or as doubles with two players on each side of the court. Then, each team hits a rubber felt ball across the net onto the opponent's side of the courts and keeps score.

How is tennis scored?

Tennis is scored in three ways: game, set and match.

Game:

In game, players have a running score until four points are reached and the leading person has two more points than their opponent. Points are counted by Love, which would be the zero point, 15, the first point, 30, the second point, 40, the third point, and the fourth point earns the title of the game.

If each player has earned three points, which is 40-40, the point is referred to as deuce. Once the deuce point has been played, whichever player obtained the point will have the advantage. Advantages can either be said as ad in (for the server) or ad out (for the receiver), depending on who received the point.

Set:

A set consists of six games. Sets are counted by ones and players will rotate sides when the games add up to an odd number. To win a set, one must reach six games and have won two more games than their opponent.. In the event that the players have tied at 6-6, a tiebreaker must be used to determine who wins the set.

A tiebreaker starts with the server serving on the right. After the first point, the opponent now serves and on the left side. Each player will continue to serve on the left first, then the right for two consecutive points before switching servers. Once they hit six points, the players will then switch sides and continue the tiebreaker. The player to reach seven points and have two more points ahead of their opponent is the winner of both the tiebreaker and the set.

Match:

A match is determined by which player won the most sets. A player must win two sets in order to win a match. If a player wins the first set and their opponent wins the second set, a third set will have to be played to determine who wins the match.
