Mr. Dayton has been the band director for Wash High For almost 15 years. He taught so many students about their second voice, music. He enjoyed what he did and always put one hundred percent into everything he did for the band. He became a "father" figure to the band and his students were his "kids".
Mr. Dayton didn't just leave his mark on Washington School District, he left a mark on every student that was in the band. Many students had Mr. Dayton from 5th grade to their senior year. He became a huge part of their lives. He was the only teacher that band students would have consistently each year. So we all formed "our family" with Mr. Dayton.
Mr. Dayton was an outstanding trumpet player. He performed with artists like Arethra Franklin, Joe Piscapo and many more. He also played in a Brass Quintet in West Virginia. They played for weddings, churches and more. He also played in the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra for 18 years.
On September 2, a candle lighting vigil was held for Mr. Dayton. This event was put together by Alumni, current band members, faculty and community members. The vigil was held in the upper parking lot of the high school. Band members played the Wash High Alma Mater in Mr. Dayton's honor. There was also a chance for people in attendance to share their memories with Mr. Dayton. At the end there was a playing and sing along of "Country Roads" by John Denver which was Mr. Dayton's favorite song that showed his love for West Virginia.
