A Little About NASA

What is NASA

National Aeronautics and Space Administration. That is what NASA stands for. It is the company that does space exploration, research, and discoveries. Nasa was the company that brought the country together in the space race. Landed a rover on mars. Set up multiple telescopes that have provided us with live changing discoveries. Reading through this website will help you get a deeper understanding of how impactful NASA was on discoveries in space.

NASA Over the Years

It was a time when America needed to catch up in the technological race and wanted to avoid being left in the dust by other countries, America had to act quickly. That's when NASA was created. The rival to the Soviets at the time, it was time America took back its title of the greatest country in all aspects. The best way to prove that we were on top again was to be the first to the moon. The two heads that led this company were directors Hugh Dryden and Robert Gilruth.

NASA had gone through and landed a man on the moon. So what was after? NASA needed something to do. NASA decided to go for data. They set up satellites in space, created space stations, and set up rovers up to Mars. NASA moved on from being a company that was trying to win a race to a company that would provide research to the whole word to learn more about the infinitely growing space.

Currently, NASA is focusing on expanding the information they have on space. For example, NASA built the James Web Telescope which has discovered an exoplanet known as LHS 475 b. NASA plans on studying this planet's qualities to further their understanding of the planets that encompass our solar system. They also plan on using the Web Telescope to gather more information in the coming years, so look forward to those discoveries!

NASA's Major Events

Moon Landing

The Moon Landing was a turning point in not just space exploration but a turning point in American History.

Hubble Telescope

The Hubble telescope was a huge jump for NASA in space discovery. It was lanched into Earth's orbit in 1990 and has been the main telescope till recently.

Mars Rover Landing

NASA's largest expedition to mars was Curiosity. Curiosity is the largest and most capable rover ever sent to Mars. It launched on Nov. 26, 2011, and landed on Mars at 10:32 p.m. PDT on Aug. 5, 2012. It was sent to discovery new things on mars and test the limits of NASA's new technology.

Challenger Explosion

The Challenger Explosion was a tragic event in American History that shaped the precautions taken before space exploration.

Space Exploration With Major Impact

Space Device Name Date Target Signifacance
Apollo 11 July 16, 1969 Moon Apollo 11 was the first human landing on the moon. It was a major leap not only for America but also for humans.
Challenger January 28, 1986 Two satellites into space(failed) The significance of the challenger is a lesson everyone can learn. Mistakes may be tragic but are amazing opportunities to learn what to do better. The goal was to send two satellites into orbit at the same time which would help NASA gather intel on space with extreme speed.
Pathfinder December 4, 1996 Mars The Pathfinder was the first rover to land on mars. It was an important landing as it marked a turning point in space technology.
Explorer 1 January 31, 1958 Earth's Orbit It was the first Satellite to reach earth's orbit sent by the USA. It was a quick response to the USSR sending Sputnik into space. This showed not only we had the technology but that the US could catch up and compete quickly.
Skylab May 14, 1973 Earth's Orbit Skylab was the first space station launched by the US. It was a space station that let the US test the limitations and resistance of the technology they had at hand. Skylab was active for roughly 6 months.
