Player Spotlight (Personal Favorites)

Sidney Crosby

Sidney Crosby

Sidney Crosby is regarded as one of the best hockey players of this generation, and for good reason. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins with the No. 1 pick in the 2005 NHL Draft and finished his rookie season with 102 points. Crosby was named captain of the Penguins in 2007, at just 19 years old. Crosby has been the face of the Penguins for my entire life, and he’s always been one of my favorite players. It may be a cliché answer, but there’s no shortage of reasons for favoring Sidney Crosby.
In the game against the Utah Hockey Club on Nov. 23, 2024 (which I attended), Crosby scored his 600th goal, becoming the 21st player to do so and joining Mario Lemieux (690 goals) as the only players to do so for the Penguins.

Owen Pickering

Owen Pickering

Another one of my favorite players is less well-known and currently plays for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, although I believe he has already proven his capabilities in the NHL. He is a key piece for the Penguins' future, bringing a blend of size, skill, and maturity to the organization. As he continues to develop, he could become an important part of the team's defensive core for years to come.
Owen Pickering was drafted by the Penguins in the first round (21st overall pick) of the 2022 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut on November 16, 2024, in a game against the San Jose Sharks, and scored his first goal on December 3, 2024, against the Florida Panthers.

Penguins News

Some of these are less recent but still felt noteworthy.

During the Feb. 22nd game against the Washington Capitals, players for both teams wore decals on their helmets to honor the late Mike Lange, who dedicated 46 years to broadcasting for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang joined Lange’s two sons, Tanner and Ian, and their families at the Zamboni gate for a tribute before the game. A snippet from a post made by the Pittsburgh Penguins account reads “The Hall-of-Famer’s voice is synonymous with the biggest calls in franchise history, including all five Stanley Cup Championships, and his unique one-liners and knack for anticipating game-changing plays set him apart from other announcers. Only Mike could make the biggest names in hockey seem even more magical with just his voice.”

To promote the NHL's return to Olympic Ice Hockey in 2026, the 4 Nations Face-Off replaced the 2025 NHL All-Star Game. Held from February 12-20, 2024, in Montreal and Boston, the round-robin tournament featured teams from Canada, the United States, Sweden, and Finland. Each team had 13 forwards, 7 defensemen, and 3 goalies. Team Canada won the tournament, with Sidney Crosby as captain and Nathan MacKinnon named MVP after scoring the overtime-winning goal in the championship game. Team USA finished as runner-up despite having the most points in the tournament. The Pittsburgh Penguins had three players: Crosby, Erik Karlsson (Sweden), and Rickard Rakell (Sweden).

Jan. 31, 2025, the Penguins completed a trade with the Canucks following Vancouver’s game against Dallas at American Airlines Center. Pittsburgh acquired the New York Rangers’ 2025 first-round draft pick (conditional), forward Danton Heinen, defenseman Vincent Desharnais, as well as 2024 third-round draft pick Melvin Fernstrom from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for defenseman Marcus Pettersson and forward Drew O’Connor.

The QMJHL announced that starting this season, the Rookie of the Year winners will be awarded the Sidney Crosby trophy. Before making his NHL debut, Crosby played two seasons for the Océanic of the QMJHL after being selected as the first overall pick in the 2003 QMJHL Draft. Because of his significant impact on the league and his impressive resume, Crosby was the unanimous choice when the trophy committee met.

Just 48 hours after Tristan Jarry was placed on waivers and sent to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL, Alex Nedeljkovic made history during the Jan. 17th game against the Buffalo Sabres. In the second period, Nedeljkovic recorded an assist by setting up forward Cody Glass for a goal. Later, in the final minutes of the game, Nedeljkovic scored a goal from the other side of the ice, becoming the first goalie in NHL history to record both a goal and an assist in the same game. Had Ned gotten into a fight, he would’ve been the first goalie to record a Gordie Howe hat trick – a feat that would likely never be replicated. Nedeljkovic became just the second goalie in Penguins history to score a goal, following Tristan Jarry, who did so last season. Only 16 goalies have lit the lamp in NHL history, amounting to a total of just 19 goals.
