Wash High Soccer

Wash High, Fort Cherry, and Burgettstown

Meet the Team

Our Team

Our team is a co-op between three different schools; we have players from Wash High, Fort Cherry, and Burgettstown. This team is also the only one in our division that is also co-ed, having both girls and boys play on the same team due to a lack of players. However, it's pretty evenly split between girls and boys leaving us just able to field a team. This coalition came into play in 2022 when none of the schools had enough players to field teams, so we combined forces to create one team. Unfortunately, this moved us up to a larger section, giving us tougher opponents considering we still have a relatively small team.

Coaches

The team is led by Head Coach Bob McCurdy, assisted by Joe Blickenderfer. Both coaches signed on in 2022, and this is their second year coaching at Wash High. With years of coaching experience through Victory Soccer and other coaching programs, they've brought a whole new style of play to the team. They've spent the last two years working to reform and develop the soccer program to build it up in the years to come.

Our Season

Overall, we didn't have the most successful season in terms of games won, but as a team, we grew and advanced a lot. We started pretty strong with a few nice wins and some tough-fought games, but as the season progressed, our The lack of substitutes and players wore us out. Running two games a week as well as practicing with few subs as well as many of our players are also involved in other sports, heavily affecting our performances in the later season. Our conference record was 4-6, placing us in the middle of the rankings, and our overall record was 5-13.

As we developed throughout the season, facing the challenges of injuries and working around dual-sport athletes, we managed to hold our own against some of the tougher teams in our division. Regardless of our record, our team this year was much more coordinated and had a lot more chemistry, allowing us to play a more controlled unified game as a team rather than as individuals. We worked hard to maintain our playstyle and not resort to individual plays to win games which is what kept us strong throughout the season.

Maintaining our composure and mentality was also something we were strong in, even in the face of a tough loss or disrespectful behavior from opposing teams we held firm as a team and didn't let their actions change our play. In the end, we had a really enjoyable season and it was a successful season considering the obstacles we had to overcome.

Formation

Our formation is more defensive-sided and based around maintaining control and moving up the pitch as a unit rather than individual runs. This benefits us because it helps preserve our energy, as rather than sending long runs, we work our way down the field as a unit, which is beneficial considering we have the fewest players in our division. The formation will occasionally adjust to a more aggressive style. depending on the opposing team's playstyle.

Future Seasons

Going forward into future seasons, we're hoping to further develop the program to draw in more players and gather more support. In the upcoming years, we're hoping to build up a steady program to maintain both a girls and a boys team, rather than just one co-ed team, and hopefully get some more fans out to support us!
