Wash High Girls Basketball

Turn Around

In the past 5 years the girls basketball team has had 3 different coaches. So the past years have been shaky when it came to the record books. From losing almost every game in the season in the previous year to becoming section camps the next. Seeing that it was never the athletes, they always had the talent, they just needed a coach to believe in their abilities and to push them harder. Last years coach, Wise, managed to coach a team that went on to have a conference record of 12-0 last year. Last year was one of the highest State Division Rank the girls' team had at a rank of 38. Even though the players might not admit it, a big part of their success was not only their talent but also their coach. Hopefully with the upcoming season they can go undeafeated again and go further than they did last year.

Coaches

Josh Wise and Tim Witenske

The 2022-2023 basketball season, the girls basketball team got a new coach. Josh Wise. He graduated from Washington High school in 2013 so he was already familiar with the school. While in school as a senior Wise was his sections Player of the Year and a PIAA AA Third-Team All-State selection. He ended his high school basketball career as his schools third all-time leading scorer with over 1,300 points. After his high school career he went on to play at Pitt-Johnstown and there he made a big impact on the team. After college he played one season overseas. He came back to Washington where there was an opening for a basketball coach. He got the job and the rest is history.

The team is also assisted by Tim Witenske. He is from Pittsburgh, Pa and went to Upper St. Clair High School. He played three seaons of basketball at his high school and he also lettered three times in football. Though hes a baskeball coach now, he actually went to Allegheny College to play football. He graduated from there and came to teach at Wash High. He now coaches alongside Josh Wise.

This season

With a trophy on there back from last year, the girls are hoping to go even further than they did before. They started tryouts, practices, and conditioning already to prep for their upcoming season. Wise is pushing the girls to go even harder this year because he knows last year win means nothing and its time to move on to bigger things. Instead of winning just section champs, they hope to win state champs. Yesterday was there first open scrimmage, though the score isnt kept, Wash High crushed them. Hopefully the rest of the season can be that easy for them. From an outsider like me, seeing how hard the girls work and how hard the girls are pushed everyday mentally and physically, I believe they have it in them to make it further than any previous Wash High girls team has done.
